New library in Kalasatama created together with city residents

The City of Helsinki library services will expand with the establishment of the city’s 38th library in Kalasatama. A business premise in shopping centre Redi has been confirmed as the new library’s location, and the opening is scheduled to take place in late autumn 2023. The concept of the new library will be formed in a user-oriented manner, paying attention to the requests of local residents.

With the Kalasatama library, the number of branches in the Helsinki library network is growing for the first time in the 21st century. The new library will support Helsinki City Library’s goal of promoting reading and investing in children and young people.

“The new Kalasatama library will respond to the requests of the residents of this rapidly growing district and add to the city’s local services. It is also an important investment in our children and young people. We want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to access culture and books,” says Paavo Arhinmäki, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Leisure.

The new library will have modern facilities and offer a wide range of services to cater to everyone.

Helsinki City Library wants to include the voice, needs and ideas of city residents in the planning of the new facility.
