The Baltic Sea is celebrated in Välkky and other libraries of Espoo on 30.-31.8.

The activity bus Välkky is transformed into The Baltic Sea bus and circles the beaches and water spots of Espoo. In Välkky you can familiarise yourself with the life of a fish by watching science theatre, participate in a workshop and get reading tips. You can also loan trash pickers and trash bags and participate in the Clean Beach campaign organised by Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association.

THE BALTIC SEA DAY PRE-PARTY ON WEDNESDAY 30.8.

At 4pm the activity bus Välkky stops at Espoo Cultural Centre in Tapiola. You’ll get reading tips and ideas for Baltic Sea related crafts. A fun Baltic Sea related track has been made around Tapiola central pool. Search for points with the help of Välkky’s staff!

At 6pm Välkky is parked at the watersport center Laguuni in Keilaniemi, where you can participate in Itameri Plogging challenge! You can participate in the Clean Beach campaign organised by Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association. Trash pickers and trash bags can be loaned from Välkky.

At 6pm in Lippulaiva Library Words and melodies literature and baroque music. Espoon Barokki performs.

THE BALTIC SEA DAY ON THURSDAY 31.8.

At 4pm the activity bus Välkky travels to the Angry Birds Park in Oittaa. Come and watch science theatre about water and the life of a fish! The science theatre show tells the stories of the properties of water and the life of a fish from the viewpoint of environmental protection. There’s also a workshop where the Baltic Sea is drawn on milk-splattered canvas with gouache and then printed on watercolour paper. You can take the artwork you made with you. The theatre is suitable for all ages, the age limit for the workshop is 5.

Välkky participates in the Clean Beach campaign by Keep the Archipelago Clean Association. You can loan trash pickers and trash bags from Välkky during your visit.

At 5.30pm Välkky travels to the Angry Birds Park in Leppävaara. Come watch the science theatre and participate in a workshop! The theatre is suitable for all ages, the age limit for the workshop is 5.

At 5-7pm a Baltic Sea related family evening with sea-related program and music is organised in Lippulaiva Library. You can listen to music, listen to sea-related stories and do Baltic Sea related crafts.

You can tune yourself to the Baltic Sea mood by watching old archipelago-related films from the archives of KAMU Espoon Kaupunginmuseo in the biggest Espoo libraries. Archipelago-films are shown in Akseli hall in Sello Library at 1-4pm, Event Space Heikki in Tapiola at a (time announced later), Estradi in Entresse at 1-4pm, Kajuutta in Lippulaiva at 1-4pm and stage in Iso Omena at 4-9pm.

What is the Baltic Sea Day?

The Baltic Sea Day, launched and coordinated by the John Nurminen Foundation, is celebrated every year on the last Thursday in August with various rallies and events. The goal of the theme day is to highlight important marine themes, and encourage people to take concrete action for the Baltic Sea. The Day celebrates the versatility and immeasurable value of the Sea. Moreover, the celebration seeks to disseminate information on marine nature, culture, and history. In 2023 the Baltic Sea Day is celebrated on August 31st. www.balticseaday.fi
