Dario and Mika began their collaboration 11 years ago, both in duo and in several ad hoc ensembles. This work eventually grew into projects like Qoheleet, featuring many improvisers from the young Dutch wave in Amsterdam and ZuGaBe, a Swiss-based trio featuring Alex Riva on recorders. In all these years consciously or unconsciously, they have always been looking for the right drummer. All experiments to this failed, until they stumbled upon the Tampere-based percussionist Simo Laihonen, whose singular, beautiful style makes him an indispensable third member of Bad Bender. His wide range of focus, from framing the music to the minute grains of sound, gives form and shine to the trios music.
Bad Bender formed itself with the aim of bridging the avant garde with the avant-avant garde. A Trance of tastes, smells and rhythms folded within the geometry of the abstract. Fearless in their delivery and drive, they are on the cusp of re-defining tradition - something that always was, and a passage to yet unknown dimensions. With Dario Fariello’s performance-convention-breaking soprillo, sopranino and alto saxophone expressions augmented by his intensive use of synthesis techniques, Szafirowski and Laihonen have no choice but to put an end to meandering rhythm playing and lay it all on the line. The anarchic, prepared guitar often played with extended bowing techniques matches perfectly the pulsating free roaming of hand drums and bells along with a beautiful sounding trap kit.
