The music of Claude Debussy was first performed in Helsinki in February 1906 as interpreted by Quatuor de Bruxelles. Inspired by Debussy’s music, Robert Kajanus conducted the Finnish premiere of Debussy’s symphonic poem Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune in 1908 at a concert hosted by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society.

The string quartet of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra invites you today to travel back to the beginning of the 20th century and dive into the beauty of the French Impressionism. Imagine yourself in nature or perhaps standing in front of a painting by one of Debussy’s contemporaries, such as Monet, Klimt or Renoir. Contemplate fully the colours and their expression, which served as a constant source of inspiration for Debussy: “Pleasure is the only rule!”
